Vtg New Handmade Hand Quilted Chestnut Applique by Quilters Hall of Fame Artist. This is truly an exceptional quilt, and a fantastic opportunity for collectors. This quilt is 77" x 92", queen size, has never been washed, but is still a vintage item, made in the 1970s-1980s. It still bears some transfer marks from the iron-on pattern, which would be gone if this item had ever been washed.

This quilt is 100% hand sewn, hand quilted, appliqued, and embroidered. The beautiful scalloped edge has been bound in green binding, and the exquisite hand quilting is excellent quality at 8 per inch. About the artist who created this quilt. Her name is Arene Burgess and her work is without peer. She was a prolific quilter, often producing items that were displayed, then put away for preservation.

She was a Quilt Historian, teacher of quilting and applique. Arene's work is featured in the Quilters Hall of Fame, in Marie Webster's Arene Burgess Collection. Appraisal of a quilt includes many factors: age, condition, pattern, quality of work, and subject matter.

This quilt features the horse chestnut, or American Chestnut, also known as buckeye tree, which were nearly wiped out because of the chestnut blight of 1904. This tree is indigenous to North America, and currently on the "critically endangered" list.

This quilt is a celebration of this uniquely American tree, depicting the flowers, the fuzzy balls (sometimes called conkers) which contain the actual chestnut, and the beautiful leaves, in flawless applique with embroidered details.
