Quilt Top Friendship Ring Dresden Applique Plates Vintage Cotton Petal Border

  
Here is a vintage quilt top in the Friendship Ring pattern, #3471a in the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman. This design is categorized as a Wheels pattern with more than eight petals. It is attributed to Coats and Clark. Design is very similar to the Dresden Plate which has 20 petals, this pattern has 16 petals. Top is a combination of machine piecing and hand applique and measures approximately 73" x 92" in a 5 x 6 block setting. Fabrics are generally small print florals and geometrics from the 1930s to 1940s. Each plate has a yellow center and these are appliqued onto a blue background.

The petal borders alternate a print with the same blue background solid. The last photo shows the top construction from the back. There are some areas of light brown staining on the background. I have tried to show these areas in the photos.

The actual plates are clean, although at least one yellow center has some spotting. Please note the wide area, approximately 6, of background across the upper portion of the top.

This was most likely done to make the top a specific size. Item does not include any backing fabric, binding or batting for the top. When working with vintage fabric, blocks, tops or quilts, prior quilting and piecing experience is helpful. Pieces were not rotary cut and cutting templates and patterns may not have been square. Pieced items may not be flat.
