The land was more difficult to farm and success was not certain. Emigrants brought with them their quilting traditions which they adapted to their new land. Western New York State was filled with waterfowl from the Great Lakes and Canada, and the ground was often more rock than soil.
This GOOSE CHASE Variation depicts "triangles" of flying geese in patches surrounded by a Unique Border of "triangles" that mimic rocks or mountains in the landscape. TWO slightly different OCHRE YELLOW Prints and a GREEN Print are masterfully combined in this exceptionally patterned and executed quilt. The production of small patterned prints was a great accomplishment for the textile manufacturing industry.
Often called "Quaker Prints" these cotton fabrics provided seamstresses with a vast choice of colors. OCHRE YELLOW was a very sought after color in the mid-Nineteenth Century, as was GREEN which had always been difficult to produce. This Maker has brought together these two exceptional hues in small patterned fabrics that appear to be solid colors until you view them close-up. The GOOSE CHASE is bound nicely with the ochre yellow as Binding.
There is a solid ochre yellow Backing. This quilt could be displayed on a wall or on a Single (as in the bed photo) or Double bed. There is some minor aging as in all quilts of this vintage, but in excellent usable condition.
