French Antique Quilt Piquee Boutis Natural Canvas Cotton Intricate Floral Design

This is a gorgeous French antique quilt, with a beautifully intricate floral quilt top and a dense cotton batting inside! Machine-quilted and machine-stitched along the edges, this gorgeous quilt is made from a roller- and handblock-printed cotton quilt top, and a pieced natural canvas and cotton backing. Dating from circa 1870, the intricate floral top on this quilt has a Greco-Roman-inspired feel to it, and is illustrative, finely detailed, and designed with a lovely cool-tone palette of greens, taupes, and blues! The backing is pieced to create a stripe pattern with the natural canvas and the red-dyed cotton possibly remnants of an old nautical flag?

Soft, squeezable, and heavy, this quilt adds lovely antique charm to a variety of room styles! From Classical to farmhouse and everything in between, the delicate floral pattern and striking red and white color palette on the back make for such wonderful design versatility! There does seem to be another quilt top and back underneath what is shown in the photos (not totally sure, as we have not opened it ourselves) - a more adventurous and experienced quilter could certainly unpick the stitching and discover what's underneath!

MEASUREMENTS: This lovely quilt measures approximately 55 inches wide by 77 inches long. This quilt is in as-found condition, and has not been freshly laundered, with light storage dust. You could perhaps launder this quilt at home - we chose not to, because we are unsure whether the red cotton on the back of the quilt will bleed in the wash.

The safest way to clean this quilt would be to dry clean it! Overall this quilt is in lovely condition, but not without the signs of time, use, age, and love so often inherent in these wonderful textiles. There are some very small pepper marks here and there on the quilt top - these are very pale indeed, and may or may not fade more over time. There is some light age discoloration and staining on the natural canvas backing. There may be one or two other imperfections here or there on both sides of this quilt: a tiny rust stain, a small pale mark, etc.
