Scholars debate the origin of this pattern, European or American. I found this textile in America, it came from an old home in Vermont.
This pattern is documented in " America's Indigo Blues" Florence H Pettit, a fabulous resource. This resist uses 2 shades of blue on white with picotage. The barque and the figure holding a banner are 10 inches high. The ground cloth is a loosely woven cotton and backed in a loosely woven gauze like cotton. This textile is hand stitched and hand quilted.
MEASUREMENTS : This rare textile measures 83 inches by 73 inches. CONDITION: This textile is in wonderful condition for it's age and use.There is fading consistent with its age. There are some small holes here and there.
