Description ------- One (1), genuine, antique, QUILT TOP (no batting, no backing, raw edge - to finish or use as-found). This quilt top consists of hand pieced blocks in the traditional LOG CABIN pattern, with a loosely followed sun + shadow rule. Why we love it : This quilt top exhibits a happy, a folk art bent, in Americana colors of turkey red, cream/white, and blues, but with the surprise of pinks, browns, black, greens, and a tiny bit of purple. Dating : The fabrics are all cotton, a frugal collection: most are mens shirt fabrics with surface texture - including two pieces of shirting still with their embroidered ribbon labels (see detail pics). These label remnants help to date this quilt top to 1884 or after (based on the companys name change, to latest, about 1920). Victorian calicos; mini prints; a few, black mourning prints; and a few neat over-dyes. Complete this late 19th/early 20th century quilt tops fabric array.

Frugality : Each log cabin block was backed, by the maker, with an old square of plain cotton muslin, or a spare cotton scrap. This quilt was found, by me, in an attic of a c1840 house in Millstone, NJ. It was never completed, and likely never used - as some basting threads are still visible here and there on the top.

It does have a lot of stains to the backing cotton muslin pieces, from storage. However, there are much fewer stains on front. Some edge pieces and blocks need minor restitching to the pieced seams.

Size is roughly 78 x 78. The outer edge is raw, as mentioned. 7 blocks x 7 blocks of log cabin in this quilt top = 49 squares. Log Cabin quilts are traditionally finished as thread tied-quilts, which makes them less labor intensive to complete than overall quilted quilts. Colors are vibrant and harmonious.
